Brussel Salad

Week two of my #52foodchallenge is in praise of the glorious Brussel Sprout. I have to confess they were not a personal favourite for some years, mainly because as a child I was served them boiled within an inch of their lives and smelling of old socks! Now I find they are great in stir fries, par boiled and fried up with some onions and Parmesan, or shredded in a salad.

The days have been very flat and grey lately so I decided to photograph a salad in response to this prompt to capture some bright, fresh colours. I like to use the challenges to push myself and try new things so I wanted to create a sense of fun and movement in this shot. After all it is about seeing Brussels in a new light. Initially, I was going to use a bowl and then decided the cake stand would add that extra touch of quirkiness.

I never find this kind of shot easy, and this one was definitely a matter of trial and error. I decided to do it in natural light which probably made it more difficult than necessary. I also shot on a higher speed than I would usually use because while I wanted some blur I did want some of the falling ingredients in focus too.  This was a lot of fun and flying bits of apple stuck to the wall caused lots of laughter!
